What Seest Thou?

Bro. JJ Marais, Youth Pastor

What Seest Thou?

Twice the Lord asked Jeremiah the question. Before he spoke a prophetic word to the nation of Judah and Israel, he was challenged by God. We know that he was called (See Jeremiah 1:5) and chosen to be God’s mouthpiece (See Jeremiah 1:9). Yet, in order to carry out God’s plan, Jeremiah had to see the vision.

Jeremiah 1:11-14 KJV

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. [12] Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it. [13] And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north. [14] Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

As Jeremiah was called to be a prophet unto the nations, each of us have been called by God to carry out His purpose. We are a chosen generation… a peculiar people (see 1 Peter 2:9). There is but one body, and one Spirit, even as we are called in one hope of our calling (see Ephesians 4:4).

And the challenge falls on us, when God asks the question - What Seest Thou?

Throughout the Bible you find people who were truly impacted by what they saw.

Moses got to see a flame of fire in the midst of a bush and it not be consumed as God spoke through it. (Exodus 3)

Joshua sought out the land flowing with milk and honey and saw prosperity. (Numbers 14)

Nebuchadnezzar threw three Hebrew boys in a fiery furnace and saw four walking in the midst. The fourth described like the Son of God. (Daniel 3)

Isaiah saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on the throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. (Isaiah 6)

However, some spies saw defeat when they referred to those as giants in the Promised Land and themselves as grasshoppers. (Numbers 13)

Lot’s wife took her last breath gazing back at Sodom. (Genesis 19)

Cain was the first human born. His brother Abel was the first to die. The tragedy of what Cain saw when he slew his brother with anger. (Genesis 4)

The thirty pieces of silver Judas took after betraying Jesus, only to throw it away and end his life. (Matthew 27)

While the world tries to showcase it’s glamour, immorality, fame, and popularity, God is wanting to show something eternal, supernatural, spiritual, and unconditional to His people. We must do our best to search it out ourselves. To seek after the supernatural. To be looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. It may be you God is asking - What Seest Thou?
